E-325: Reach for the Stars

Random Vegas
Although gambling was legalized in 1931, the state didn’t begin attempting to regulate casinos until 1945, with the creation of the Nevada Tax Commission.  Before that, it was just taxed. (Of Rats and Men novel)

This is why I love Vegas signage and @classiclasvegas has captured the best representation I’ve ever seen of what it’s like to walk among the Vegas steel and neon giants.  This picture literally causes my heart to flutter with a feeling only describable as similar to that feeling you got in your stomach every time you were crushing hard on someone.  If I ever become homeless, I will make it my life’s goal to penetrate every old school sign I can.  I know that sounds like I just said I was going to fuck neon signs but what I meant was I’d find a way to sneak inside, perhaps call them my home.  I’m now realizing I just tipped off authorities about my planned activity.  Oh well, I guess the game just got a little more challenging.

E-322: An Uncomfortable Conversation

Random Vegas
Glass installation at Circa has begun! To mark that occasion, Vital Vegas shared a few project factoids. Since construction began on Oct 3rd of 2019, Circa has been building a floor per week.  While the announced plan for the project is 777, Circa will actually open with 500 rooms and 71 suites.  Demand will determine if the remaining rooms will be turned into suites or some version of a standard room. Lastly, while there are loads of other information shared in the article, the item that caught our attention is the potential future home of Vegas Vicki, INSIDE Circa, featured in the lobby, so large that she will be situation in the middle of a hole in the ceiling to give her room to fit over two stories.

Come...the fuck...on.  How cool did Caesars Palace used to look?  Of course, why the fuck this made Jay Sarno think of ancient Rome, who knows?  The renovated look better supports the overall theme and is clearly an improvement. All that being said, this is kind of what date night looks like in Las Vegas...wicked cool.  Maybe not like the old school Caesars Porte Cashere shared by @classiclasvegas but you get the point.  That feeling you get looking at this picture...it feels like that for locals when actually doing it.  So haters, line up, and make sure your insults are succinct...and speak up, cause it’s hard to hear you standing this close to old school neon.

Binion’s Horseshoe signage contained 8 miles of neon tubing and 30,000 light bulbs when it was installed in 1961 (Neon Museum)

Have you ever had a metaphor scream at you the moment you saw a picture?  Get ready for that experience.  @classiclasvegas shared a picture of, not only a monumental time in Vegas history, but also a passing of the guard.  Showcased in black and white, add further depth to the allegory, this view of the Mirage, under construction, signals that everything is about to change, radically, in Las Vegas.  Captured off strip, the photo showcases the Sands Cylindrical tower in the foreground.  In the background, the scope of the Mirage project is so great, it seems to engulf the Sands, as if to say, I am the future, prepare for obsoletion.  What was once identified as a Vegas icon looks dated and quant in this picture as evolution happens right across the street.

E-256: Schedule to Completion

Random Vegas

The original plans for the Dunes Oasis Casino was a see though glass pyramid.  The finished plan was a round building with tinted glass that made it disappear at night and extenuate its neon signage.

Another example of circumstantial magic only available in Las Vegas, the moment I saw @cosmo1261mark's picture, I knew it was Twitpic of the week. While typically it would have been in the running for the accolade in last weeks show, last week's winner was already chosen and had its monolog written before this picture was discovered. So according to the rules I've made up around this whole process, that meant it couldn't be considered for the honor until this week. So, yea for loopholes! @cosmo1261mark's picture captures a moment in Vegas I have to imagine everyone who loves the city enough to enjoy this podcast has experienced...magic hour. That moment when the exterior lights of the casino compete for attention with the sun while it fades in the distance. But much more than that, it's a reality check. When you accidently step outside of the haze of Vegas glory to realize things are happening out in the real world not nearly is amazing as what you are currently doing. Remembering that there are people, all around the world, who are suffering...because they currently aren't you, in Las Vegas, seeing views like this.

E-254: The Value of the Worthless

Random Vegas
The 1st  Elvis impersonator to perform a resident show in Vegas before Elvis died appeared at the Dunes from 1976-78.  It was called "For the Love of Elvis" and featured Johnny “Elvis” Foster.  Fun fact, owner of the Dunes, Morris Shekner, was Johnny's Godfather

Twitpic of the week

Pretty certain this is a staged publicity shot but I don't care, it evoked a monolog so its winning "Twitpic of the week".  Without showing an inch of neon, a single casino or any generally recognized Vegas landmark, @Cosmopolitan_LV's picture was able to capture an instantly recognizable, uniquely Vegas moment to anyone who frequents or proclaims love for the city.  A view that simultaneously exudes sex without being blatant and opportunity beyond gambling; okay that last part sounds sinister but when you remove the rape connotations, you know what I mean.  Even though one of the ladies featured in this picture looks like she might be receiving some help to secret sustenance the overwhelming feeling I get from this picture is most commonly known as the time of your life.  3 ladies who take care of themselves, showing off the fruits of their labor in a tasteful yet alluring way, all while enjoying themselves, each others company and doing exactly what they want to do at that moment in a city where virtually anything can happen, including things that will come to be the highlights of ones existence.
