360 Vintage Vegas: El Rancho: The 1st Resort on the Strip

Isolated gambling clubs existed on Highway 91 before 1941 but the concept of a full scale resort with overnight accommodations, gaming, dining, entertainment and shopping all in one vacation destination wasn’t conceived as something anyone would want in the harsh desert climate.  The El Rancho not only offered something Highway 91 had never seen, it set a precedent by creating a themed vacation destination that would shape what would later become the Las Vegas Strip.  This is the story of the El Rancho Vegas.

Vegas Mate Review of the Week - This week’s winner is Cody’s Dec 12 review of Luxor – 3/5 chips

Twitpic of the Week

This week’s winner comes to us from @matt_wdafc for his amazing picture of Luxor.  Luxor has always been one of my favorite buildings in Vegas.  Luxor was the property that drew me to Vegas and the first property that I stayed at.  This is the best picture I’ve ever seen of Luxor without having the Sphinx in it.  I don’t have anything against the Sphinx but I think the black glass of the pyramid is stunning in and of itself, especially when shown from bottom to top.  This picture is taken from the pool area and captures almost the entire pyramid.  The picture captures not only the sun in the top right of the photo but an individual ray stretched from the sun to the ground across the pyramid.  It’s a stunning picture and we are thrilled to add it to our collection.

E-26: Frontier Swag

Random Vegas - The never-before heard Beatles’ multi-tracks are locked up at the Mirage and they never leave the building.  Not only do they have the chatter you hear in between songs but the individual tracks of each instrument and voices, all adjustable to fit the shows need. Vegas Mate Review of the Week - Toots' Dec 5th review of Westin Casuarina - 5/5 chips

Twitpic of the Week

This week’s “Twitpic of the Week” winner goes to our first back-to-back winner @mhbroadhurst for this bad ass picture of the south strip.  This picture was taken during the same helicopter ride as the one he was on when he captured last week’s Twitpic of the week.  This week’s winner is an amazing panoramic photo capturing Mandalay Bay and Luxor in one shot.  It’s one of those views that makes me wonder what it’s like to live in Vegas, close to the strip and be able to see things like this every day out your door or window.  Just amazing pictures and in-fact, kind of came in at the last minute and stole Twitpic of the week.  We had actually already selected a different winner but after seeing these pics, changed it before we recorded the show.  He sent us several pictures similar to this, all of which could have won Twitpic of the week but we choose this one and are thrilled to add it to our collection

Random Vegas - The Stratosphere was originally conceived to have a giant ape that would carry riders up and down one of the tower’s columns.  (Pulse of Vegas Blog)

Vegas Mate Review of the Week - This week’s winner goes to Bob for his Nov 24th review of Mandarin Oriental – 5/5 Chips

Twitpic of the Week

This weeks winner goes to @mhbroadhurst for his picture of the Strip from a helicopter.  It’s an amazing view of the strip from north strip looking down and captures just about everything from Harrah’s down to Mandalay Bay and beyond.  I particularly like how the road continues past Mandalay and gives the appearance that it just goes off into the desert.  It really gives the illusion that Las Vegas Blvd is just sitting like an oasis in middle of a desert.
