E-289: The Grand Lie

Reflections.  With so many glass buildings on the strip there are almost limitless opportunities to catch a glimpse of a distorted reality.  A manifestation of euphoria captured by @evilsamgraham and shared so all can fondly recall those moments when you realize the countdown to passing out has begun and the journey to your room needs to begin immediately.  A dreamlike state in which details will need to be told to you by friends who better paced themselves.  An adventure always worth the price of admission, no matter how much it costs.

E-281: De-WTFing

In the original King Tut exhibit at Luxor, the hieroglyphs were authentic replications and King Tut’s tomb is said to be exactly the way it was originally found by archeologists (Super Casino)

It may be another end of an era or just a little de-what the fucking. Either way, @VitalVegas and @JamesInLasVegas shared this week that Harrah's appears to be the next Vegas property to de-theme.  Truth be told, the Mardi Gras/Carnival theme has always felt a bit shoehorned into the space originally designed to be a riverboat when it opened in 1973.  It wasn't renovated into its current incarnation until Harrah's bought the property in 1992.  Renovations in recent years to the properties interior have already removed many of the other themed elements, most notably in the hotel check in area and Porte cochere.  While a de-theming is only speculated what is clear is that, post Planet Hollywood marquee renovation, Harrah's is next for an LED upgrade and that includes replacing the north corner jester riding another jester bird thing.  So long old friend, you always sort of creeped us out.

360 Vegas Review: LINQ Promenade Summer 2014

Las Vegas’ continuing success is its ability to reinvent itself when the market needs it to.  Unlike urban developments in established cities, Vegas doesn’t venerate the old, the past or history in general.  Nothing is so sacred that it can’t be imploded to make way for the next thing. While it can be sad to lose that history, it is unarguable that for Vegas, it works.

As much as I’ve fallen in love with the cities history, it was it’s current incarnation that drew me to it for the first time.  Properties like Luxor, Excalibur, NYNY and Paris are what caught my attention and cultivated the desire to experience Las Vegas. In a very short period of time, I’ve learned about her history and enjoyed her evolution.

That brings us to now and Vegas’ current incarnation, retail.  It started with shopping malls and have transformed into outdoor dining and shopping experiences.  The Linq promenade was a brand new experience to the market and has already been mimicked by Bally’s Grand Bazaar and MGM’s The Park.  Vegas properties are finally understanding that the guests of today aren’t trying to get out of the desert heat; they want to spend lots of time in it.

Of the 5 casinos robbed in the original Ocean’s 11 staring Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. & Dean Martin, only one still exists today, that is the Flamingo.  The other 4 are the Sahara, Riviera, the Dunes and the Desert Inn

Acknowledging the resurrection of Luxor as a hell of a place to gamble, thanks in large part to friend of the show Michael Patton and his team, God Zeus decided to draw your attention to them via his mighty thunderbolt, officially decreeing them the place of preference of the gods, captures in spectacular fashion and shared by @brookskpeterson.  Odin could not be reached for comment but Lord Ganesh was said to have thought it pretty sweet.
