Twitpic of the Trip

I knew this one the second I took it.  As I was wandering around the pool taking pictures, looked up, saw the sun at the top of the Eiffel Tower and just started taking pictures.  The shot we chose is slightly askew, which is why it’s our favorite.  It kind of made me think that Paris is the center of warmth in the world making Vegas my paradise.  Every time I’m in Vegas, I wander around looking for something beautiful to take a picture.  The problem is I always seem to find hundreds but this was my favorite of this trip.

360 Vintage Vegas: Wilbur Clark's Desert Inn

Download MP3

Unlike the Flamingo and Billy Wilkerson, the Desert Inn was a dream come to fruition for Wilbur Clark.  Years of development, planning and construction made into a reality, even if everything didn’t go exactly to plan.  As with many big dreamers, ambition can sometimes outlast finances, which was the case for Wilbur Clark and his Desert Inn.

Moe Dalitz was a man with a dream as well, legitimacy.  Las Vegas offered the opportunity to apply his gambling business acumen legally and in public.  When his friend Meyer Lansky informed him of the financial problems the Desert Inn had encountered preventing the project from being completed, he jumped at the opportunity to invest.

The deal between Wilbur and Moe gave majority ownership to Dalitz but kept Wilbur in place as a partner as well as the legitimate face of the property.  It may be the first and only true partnership between organized crime owners and the legit front man.  In most cases, the guy out front was little more than a bullied puppet with little to no input on operations.  In the case of Wilbur and Moe, the Desert Inn partnership would go on to make them both very rich men.

Twitpic of the Week

This week’s winner is @StevejAnderson’s picture of NYNY and the surrounding area taken from a Helicopter.  This might be one of my favorite helicopter photo.  You get to see the entire resort in one shot and how it fits in with the surrounding resorts.  It’s another example of how theming makes Vegas so unique, special and appealing.  Take note Caesars and find a good theme for IP.  Even though it was a shitty Asian theme before, it was still a theme.  Love this picture.  I wish I could get photos of every property like this.

Vegas Mate Review of the WeekBenny Snowdon’s July 1st review of Tropicana – 5/5 chips

Twitpic of the week

This week’s winner is @mrashermarad sweet pic of the Vegas strip taken from a helicopter.  I’ve never taken one of these trips and I’m really thinking I should.  These pictures are just breathtaking.  Like the clip in our theme song, the strip is just the most amazing stretch for road.  We’ve all flown over major cities and seen all the skyscrapers centered in one little circle area the thin out to the burbs.  In Vegas, you have the long strip of skyscrapers surrounded by burbs.  It’s so cool.  This picture reminds me and stirs up the same feelings I get when flying into Vegas.  Once you can see it from the plane window you get butterflies in your stomach because you are so close to being there.  Watching the strip become larger and larger in the window until you finally land.  Ironically, this exact same view can make me sad if I think of it as watching the strip shrink to nothing as I fly home.  But lets not think of it that way.  I love this picture.  I love Las Vegas.

This week’s winner is @johncolsonphoto who shared a very unique photo of The Caesars Palace Augustus and Octavious towers with Rio in the in the foreground as well as the reflection of Bill’s Gambling Hall’s Neon appearing on what I can only assume is a car window.  It looks dream like or a part of some old Vegas montage.  It’s such a unique photo and leave it to @johncolsonphoto to capture it.  This guy is a fuckin artist.  Thanks for sharing it.
