E-45: Let's Get Long Hauled

Random VegasA 45-year old chip from the Showboat casino in Vegas, located at the north end of the boulder strip and most recently known as the Castaways, was sold on Ebay in 2008 for nearly $29k. (Casino Player Magazine)

Twitpic of the Week

This week’s winner is @jeffreegee for his picture of the south public space at Planet Hollywood.  This is one of my favorite places to hangout in Vegas.  Any time I can hangout on the strip, people watch, enjoy the heat, I’m all about. Planet Hollywood may have the best strip frontage spaces for doing that.  I love that so many properties are developing more strip public spaces.  The picture shows the PH marquee, the PBR Rockbar as well as the entrance to the Miracle Miles shops.  It’s another one of those pictures that immediately put there, in that exact place.  Love this picture.

360 Vintage Vegas: How the Mafia came to Vegas

The mafia’s time in Vegas has been romanticized for so long that fact and fiction are often hard to distinguish.  While there is a tremendous amount of information about mafia’s time in Las Vegas, details are hard to find and almost impossible to verify.

As long as business has existed there has been organized crime in one form or another.  It’s hard to argue that prohibition helped to developed and fine tune organized crime into what would become known as “The Mafia”.  It also helped to romanticize the notion of a collection of charismatic business men who operated outside of the law to provide a service and a product that people wanted.  It also developed another belief, that the police and government were the bad guys, always trying to spoil every ones good time.

To be clear, when we refer to people in the “Mafia”, the “Syndicate”, organized crime or any variation, we aren’t accusing anyone of anything.  We are referring to them as such because that is what they are most commonly believed to be affiliated with.

We also want to make it clear that a large amount of this information is impossible to confirm.  The research we referenced to bring you this feature are recollections, investigations, stories, allegations & myths.  Unfortunately, it’s also the best collection of information available or that could be found to help tell the real stories regarding this period of time and the events and people involved in them.  This is most likely how it went down.

If you are interested in more information on the subject, recommended reading would be

However we do caution, while “When the Mob Ran Vegas” is full of interesting information, a significant amount of it is believed to be exaggerated for entertainment value as well as impossible to verify.  Despite that, it is a fun read.

E-44: Fluff Le Cock

Random Vegas  -  Before the Gaming Control Board was created in1955, acquiring a gaming license in Vegas was a simple process.  In fact, if you bought an existing casino, you didn't have to apply, you would be grandfathered in.  New owners would just take over the old owners gaming license.

This week’s winner is @ashvinlad for his picture of the O’Shea’s Marquee.  It’s really interesting how a property that everyone rips on is in the same breath adored.  I think O’Shea’s maybe a perfect example of the balance of Las Vegas.  For all the luxury resorts you need to have as many value minded properties as well.  While we like to stay at places like Cosmopolitan and Mirage, we always seem to find ourselves playing at O’Shea’s and Casino Royale.  While we know O’Shea’s will reopen on day what we don’t know is if it will be the same O’Shea’s we mock and love.  I hope it’s the later.

This week’s winner goes to @JayyLeww for a sweet picture of Stratosphere.  The picture is a POV shot from the bottom of Stratosphere looking up to the top and catching a skyjumper in mid fall.  If this picture is an accurate representation of how well they keep the tower clean, well done.  The white paint looks very fresh and clean and looks great in contrast to the blue sky and the darker blue glass of the top tower.  It’s a Vegas Icon and this picture represents it well.

E-42: Probe Droids

Random Vegas - Vegas wasn’t the first choice for gangsters to setup shop in Nevada, Reno was.  However Reno turned down all attempts by people believed to be associated organized crime to build or purchase casinos in their city.  Las Vegas was far more accommodating.   (the Book - Las Vegas Chronicles)

This week’s winner is @JesseHyde_Vegas for a sweet picture of the inside of Hyde @Bellagio.  This picture not only showcases the interior design of the club but what a unique setting it is in.  You are able to see out to the patio overlooking the Fountains of Bellagio as well as the Paris balloon across the street at night.  Several pictures from Hyde’s patio have been up for Twitpic of the week but I really enjoyed that this one gives you the inside out look.  If I wasn’t interested in checking Hyde out before, I am now.

Random Vegas - In 2011, 83% of total revenues at Venetian Macau came from gaming.  Marina Bay Sands gaming revenues made up 76.5% of the total while in Vegas, only 30.2% of the total revenue came from gaming. (Dr. Dave @unlvgaming)

This week’s winner is @MeeshCatherine for her picture of the Boulevard Pool at Cosmopolitan.  This is my favorite pool in Vegas.  I love that the pool is on the strip, the multiple levels, the environment, the recreational games and on and on.  I don’t feel like I’m missing anything at the Boulevard Pool.  I can relax and yet be right there for the Vegas action.  It’s also great for people watching on the strip.  I wish Planet Hollywood would renovate their pool in the same fashion.  Even if you are not much of pool person, you should really check this out if you’re ever staying at Cosmopolitan.
